Zoep, The Free Phone & IM for Firefox

January 25th, 2006

Hello Friend and welcome to Glaxstar’s Zoep extension developer blog for Voipster

Zoep is an interesting extension for Firefox on many levels, not least because it takes Firefox extensibility to new levels of choice for the user.

Some say a browser should just be a browser, others say the opposite and want everything in-one-bag with applications integrated into one easy-to-use tool.

An easy-to-use phone would on the face of it, be a good candidate for an integrated browser application especially an open network one like Zoep that enables you to communicate (IM only at the moment) with other open services like Google Talk.(who last week switched their network from closed to open. I wonder why?)

What ever your view is, or if you’ve never given the browser vs application platform debate a second thought, this is not really the forum to bash the debate so I hope to head-it-off by mentioning it up font ;)

One of the key reasons for Glaxstar taking on this project (other than wanting to pay the bills) was the fact of how impressed we were with Voipster’s vision of the future of telecommunications. Seriously this isn’t a suck-up to the client I mean we were seriously impressed in their belief  that communication between VOIP software systems should be inter-connected like email is today. Imagine how cool that would be, for all the systems to talk to each other so you didn’t have to have four Instant messaging numbers or a couple of  VOIP accounts that restricted you to talking to other people on the same network.

Well welcome to the future of inter-connected Internet calling straight from your web browser! This is what Zoep is all about and we’re pretty excited to be here with you to be part of the pioneering days

I’d be delighted for to join us here in shaping how this pro-extension for Firefox develops moving forward and if you’ve not yet make the switch to Firefox and are wondering what all the fuss is about, then I’d recommend you make the switch today so you can join in the fun.

Finally, I just wanted to say that we intend to adopt an open-community approach to the continued development of the Zoep extension which should work well as the Zoep back-end-engine is open-source too. For example, this blog post has not been vetted or approved by Voipster that’s not how we work, there’s no corporate sanitation here just honest community discussion.

It’s day one, my team and I are tired, it’s 4:30 AM and it’s time we went home to get  some sleep;) Glaxstar’s Jorge is in New York and half the Voipster team are in San Francisco this week so between us all we should be able to keep the blog manned almost round-the-clock

Mozilla have pushed Zoep extension live here https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=1927 so I guess it’s time to see what happens next !

Btw - I’ll keep it shorter next time!

See you friend, all the best,

Ian Hayward CEO Glaxstar
