can it communicate with AIM or yahoo?

no, there is currently no GW to these networks.

But you can communicate with Google Talk and other Jabber clients.

AIM & Yahoo don’t want to play with open-networks, shame, imagine if email was a closed-network and you could only send email to people on the same provider network, what a nightmare! Well that’s what AIM, Yahoo and Skype et’ all are trying to do, time for closed networks to move over let the open-source folks through !! AIM & Yahoo will have to join in sooner or later.
I predict it’s only a matter of time till VOIP goes the same was as email has always been, open network and use any client.
